What to do in your North Texas garden in early August

  • Start fall vegetables by seed indoors including cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and brussels sprouts.
  • Direct-sow cucumbers, okra, winter squash, and beans. Keep seedbeds evenly moist until germination.
  • Pull out summer vegetables that are not producing or suffering badly from pest and disease damage.
  • Water vegetable gardens and container plants deeply by hand in the morning. Keep an eye on containers that are drying out faster than others. Consider potting these plants up into larger containers that will hold more moisture.
  • Start perennials by seed indoors for planting in October.
  • Continue sowing sunflower seeds until August 15.
